Love is in the air and you know in your heart that if someone popped a question, someone else would say yes. Now comes the giddiest part of allchoosing the engagement ring. An engagement ring is a sign of eternal love so much care should go in to choosing just the right style and fit.

How does one go about choosing engagement ring designs? Usually, the way it works is that the shape of the stone symbolizes the relationship. It symbolizes the woman, who she is, and the commitment she makes.

Keeping that in mind, there is much room for personal taste in selecting engagement ring designs. The cutting style of engagement stones is categorized into three basic types: step cut, brilliant cut and mixed cut.

The difference between the three types is the number of facets. A facet is an edge cut into a diamond. Therefore, a 58 faceted diamond has 58 edges cut in and polished.

Engagement ring designs of the step-cut variety have rows of facets, like staircases, and usually four-sided. The Emerald and Baguette cuts are examples of this type of cut. Whereas the Emerald is rectangular or square in shape, the Baguette is more of a rectangular diamond with rows of facets. Another selection of this variety would be a Tapered Baguette, which has two long sides tapering inward.

Engagement ring designs of the brilliant-cut type are commonly round. However they can also be heart, marquise, oval and pear-shaped. A modified brilliant cut stone is called a Trillion and is triangular in shape. The brilliant-cuts all have 58 facets and are known to be the most sparkling selection of engagement ring designs available.

The mixed-cut style of engagement ring designs can encompass both step and brilliant-cut facets. Combining the beauty of the step cut and the sparkle of the brilliant cut, mixed cuts allow for much pleasant variety in engagement ring designs. Two common names of mixed-cut stones are radiant and princess. Radiant is a rectangular shaped diamond with step cut on the crown and a brilliant cut on the pavilion. Princess is a square shaped diamond with about 50 facets.

Furthermore, some websites are now letting you create your own engagement ring designs online and are allowing you the option to personalize your most loving gesture.

Diamonds were first created billions of years ago and are difficult to destroy. In fact, if a diamond is preserved, it will last far until the end of days. What better way to symbolize a couples love than a diamond engagement ring? And with so many diamond engagement ring designs to choose from, the proposal is always a joy.
